The Community Resilience Plan Intern works directly with an established community partner to develop a resilience plan that fosters the community’s ability to build on its strengths, power, and assets.
Background: The Office of Nutrition & Active Living has been working with the community partner for over five years. Throughout that time period, the community leaders participated in several initiatives and trainings. They participate in physical activity programming, walkability assessments, an art mural project, facilitation training, power mapping, and advocacy training. Youth in the community completed a Youth Participatory Action Research project using photo voice to clean up a vacant lot. Community leaders formed a Neighborhood Association and are actively involved in creating a healthy community. They successfully advocated to reroute the Mary Circulator to improve access to public transit and to install speed cushions.
The community members are mainly Spanish speaking and of Hispanic origin. The community experiences high rates of low-income, food insecurity, social vulnerability, and health disparities, as well as limited access to health services and transit options. The community also lies within an area that is surrounded by several warehouses, industry, and freeways.
